Big Sandy Lake Association meeting - April 17, 2009

Vice President Mark Johnson called the meeting to order at 8:30.

Board Members Present: John Merboth, John Pilney, Neal Sampson, Dan Branson, John Sturner,
Mark Anderson, Karen Trembley and Bob Griefzu.

Guests Present: Bruce Larson, Vern Awes, Ron Smith and Sheriff Scott Turner & Karen Tero.

Bob Griefzu will be sending a sympathy card to Maxine Babington's family.

Minutes were approved after making changes to the March 13, 2009 minutes; BSLA will pay $12.00
and hour to the DNR for the intern. There were two volunteers that offered to be on the board. Bob
Griefzu will check on one of them. John Merboth will check on the other volunteer for the board.
Treasurers Report: Dan Branson briefed the board on expenditures and deposits for February and
March. Treasurer's report approved as read.

Membership: John Merboth reported there are now 341 members for 2009 with 46 new members.

A request from President Jim Krezowski that the Big Sandy board review a letter written by Brian
McGinnis and his concern that James Kruta has applied for a conditional use permit for a auto body
collision/repair shop and auto sales on the Prairie River. Mark Anderson will comply to the McGinnis
letter…The matter was tabled until we can discuss this with Brian Napstad.

The board's time sheets are due for January, February and March.

OLD BUSINESS: Our annual meeting will be held on June 27th, beginning at 8:30 - 11:30 at the
Sand Bar…This meeting will be followed with lunch and drawings.

The Agenda for the annual meeting: Committee reports need to be short, let members know what
has been going on this past year.

Tim James a biologist from the St. Croix Watershed Research Station has been asked to speak.
They have taken core samples from Big Sandy of which he will review.

Commissioner Napstad will be asked to speak.

Someone from fisheries will be asked to speak; Dan Branson will get in touch with fisheries.

Community Meal will be hosted by the Big Sandy Board on July 15th. Bob Griefzu and John Merboth
will be in charge. They will ask for additional volunteers at the annual meeting.

Jim Krezowski, John Sturner and Mark Johnson will attend the Rivers & Lakes Conference in
Rochester.

Neal Sampson will be contacting Heidi Wolff for 360 hours for the DNR intern on Big Sandy Lake
boat ramps.

Articles for the July newsletter which will be mailed in June due to the annual meeting which is held
June 27th. These articles need to be to Jim Carlson by May 4th, we will put the newsletter together at
Karen's house on June 4th at 1:00. Some of the articles for the newsletter will be: Neal Sampson will
have an article, Mark Anderson will have news worthy items, and John M. will take over calendar of
events, there will also be bio's from volunteers that will be running for board member.

Dan Branson will contact Mike Tait regarding articles for the Web page if he would offer to do this. He
will also tell Mike that our meeting date for May has changed to May 15th.

ACLARA: Motion was made and seconded to send $25.00 to renew our membership.

Ron Smith: Clean up day for Shamrock Township will be May 2nd. The 24th of April is tax
equalization day for Shamrock Township beginning at 9:00.

Sheriff Scott Turner discussed a plan for buoy's to point out sensitive areas on Big Sandy Lake if we
would be interested. Sheriff Turner will have an article regarding buoys in the upcoming newsletter.

BSALWMP: TMDL monitoring from BAR engineering should be coming in soon. We are an impaired
lake and BAR needs to recommend corrections such as bringing phosphorus level down. Horseshoe
Lake will be studied more. BARR will be comparing sampling with Kennecott. They don't have good
flow data on the Sandy River.

Mark Johnson signed us up for 100 free red pines….Bob G. will pick them up.

INVASIVE SPECIES…Neal will be hosting a program on July 24/25th on Big Sandy Lake to identify
invasive plants. The books have been ordered. We will be pre-billed for this program. Signs will be
done that will go on major boat landings. Neal will contact Dan Guida for interns to attend this class.
This will be in the newsletter.

Water Institute will have their summer newsletter out soon.

Water Surface Use will have their first meeting when Vern White returns.

Gov't Relations: John Sturner reported the Star Lake Program is getting organized. There will be a
possibility of money coming for the program. They want to look at getting membership up and are
pushing for participation.
