BIG SANDY LAKE ASSOCIATION MEETING - January 9th, 2009 Meeting called to order by Vice President Mark Johnson at 8:37. Members Present: John Sturner, John Pilney, John Merboth, Jack Johnson, Bob Griefzu, Karen Trembley, Dan Branson & Neal Sampson Guest Present: Brian Napstad, Ron Smith The minutes for Nov. 14th 2008 were approved as read. Dan Branson gave an overview of expenses for Nov/Dec 2008. Treasurer's report was approved as read. BSL check book needs to be audited; Dan will be in touch with Ann Carlson if she could do the audit. Vice President Mark Johnson gave an update on the Clean Water Partnership Grant. There is $8,194 of funds remaining to be used by June 30, 2009. He will move some of the funds to other lines to cover the higher cost of the newsletter. There are funds for the Rivers and Lakes Conference on May 7 - 9 in Rochester, MN; BSLA can probably send three board members. BSLA needs to get bills for the invasive species class turned into Janet Smude. BSLA needs to work with Janet Smude of SWCD office to manage the grant funds. OLD BUSINESS: Jim Krezowski talked with Steve Clark's boss and the ROPE has been put on hold. Thanks to all who wrote letters, attended meetings and made phone calls. The new WEB site is in process and will be up and running soon. The old site is still running. There is a BSL board position open; this position would replace Jim Carlson. Mark Johnson will contact potential board member. Dan Branson was unable to attend the Tribal Council meeting/conference due to space available. NEW BUSINESS: None BSALWAMP: John Merboth attended this meeting. Janet Smude indicated they will be doing water monitoring on Horseshoe Lake and will continue on other sites. There was discussion regarding the landing site by Fisherman's Bay. Janet said we will have to pay half for a boat landing intern, the board needs to make a decision if we want to do that. Neal will call Heidi and ask what the cost would be for the intern. There will be a working session on soil and water….there will not be a January meeting….the February meeting place is yet to be determined. TMDL: John Pilney will get in touch with Janet and ask for the rest of data from BAR Engineering. For next year there are no plans for TMDL sampling. BAR engineering may request a couple of sampling sites for 2009? It was questioned why BAR didn't do sampling on the river with the phosphorus levels so high. Mark has been in contact with a biologist that did some samplings on Big Sandy, the core is being analyzed and the report will be sent to BAR engineering. Tim James from the DNR does not have a report ready but should have this data by February. WATER PLANNING TASK FORCE: Nothing to report. Brian Napstad reported that Shamrock Township has put in for 2 more additions for lake accesses. Shamrock has taken a lead in helping with projects. Brian reported there is no official word from the CORPS regarding the ROPE, at this time this project has been put on hold. Brian reported there will be another tower going up. NEWSLETTER: Have newsletter articles ready for Jim Carlson by March 1st. Articles for newsletter will be Water Institute Article, Specific article on membership, why we would like Big Sandy be a Star Lake, intern program, sentiments boring, Web page, calendar of events, board activities etc. John Merboth moved that Karen Trembley send notice to all board members that by-laws be changed to read article 2 section 3 be amended to read and not more than 120 days prior to said meeting. John Sturner seconded. Motion carried by board members. Annual Meeting: Dan Branson will talk to Sand Bar for hosting our annual meeting which will be June 27, 2009. Motion was made and seconded to have a Feb 13th, 2009 BSLA meeting. INVASIVE SPECIES: NEAL Sampson asked if we wanted to have another invasive species class. Motion made and seconded to have Neal organize another plant identification class. Motion made and seconded to purchase 20 identification plant books. WEB site: Motion made and seconded to select BSLassociation as our WEB domain page. Community Projects has been put on hold until Feb. meeting. Trails and Waterways - Bob Griefzu will continue to work on this project. Water Surface Use - Dan will talk to Vern about stickers on personal watercraft. John will check with DNR regarding label on personal watercraft. Fisheries - Jack Johnson will contact Rick Bruechewitz regarding fishing stamp. Dan Branson will send Rick Bruechewitz the survey outcome that was done by BSLA. John Sturner gave an update regarding the Star Lake Program. ACLARA - does not meet until April.
